Bipolar Disorder & Depression: In the News #3
Not much going on recently, but I did find out that the University of Michigan is doing something rather rare. They have just acquired $41 million in funding to open a Depression Center.
The three-story, 112,500 square-foot-building has a glass-enclosed lobby, an atrium topped with a large skylight and a rear façade made entirely of glass to bring light into the center. It’s lower level houses a 120-seat auditorium and meeting rooms that open onto a patio facing a forested area.source
I think it’s a step in the right direction so that more people can get the help they need, while reducing the risk of being misdiagnosed. They are supposed to be on the cutting-edge of care so I hope that it all works out for the best. I love that one of the top colleges has decided to enrich their students’ lives with this involved study into the human mind. I just hope that we get better psychologists and psychiatrists as a result.
A man in Las Vegas has just been given three years probation for growing marijuana. Pierre Werner would have been facing more than that, but he had a license to treat his bipolar disorder with the drug. He was also growing the marijuana in hopes of helping others who needed it for their bipolar disorder. I’m moving to Vegas, just kidding.

Adolescents who suffer from bipolar disorder may also be at risk for Post Traumatic Stress and substance use. Again, I say DUH! It’s so obvious that these would be added factors. I think they have just started doing these studies for the sake of looking busy.
