Bipolar on the ‘Net: the existence of bipolar
I haven’t done this in a while and I thought that you would all enjoy these articles online.
Kmareka talks about how so many teens are being overdiagnosed with bipolar. I totally agree. Hormonal issues do not constitute bipolar disorder. Many of the issues with depression and self-esteem all stem from growing pains, if you will.
R. Mildred points out that not all people that are running through manic to depressive episodes within hours and minutes are not bipolar. I don’t think they ever read about the ultra rapid cyclers that are out there. I have talked about my own rapid cycling and how it doesn’t fit fully into the main context, but it does fit under the lesser known and understood ultra rapid cycling phases.
SuprBlondGirl relates experiences from her past that characterize her as a person and a bipolar. Sometimes she wonders whether or not it’s just herself or the bipolar speaking through her. I wonder the same thing about myself. Would I still be just as screwed up if there was no such thing as BPD or depression? If I was on the drugs would it be better for me to be lifeless and happy? Or am I better off feeling and living and being what I am?

Thanks for linking to my post on Kmareka. As a clinical social worker with more than a decade of experience treating children and adolescents in an outpatient community mental health setting, I have witnessed the increasing tendency of the psychiatric profession to mislabel kids with emotional and behavioral difficulties (more often than not stemming from earlier traumas or attachment issues) with severe diagnoses such as bipolar disorder and to place them on a cocktail of powerful psychotropic medications. I find this quite alarming. I talk more about this topic in an artticle entitled, “Suffer the Children.” The link is as follows:

The link to the ultra rapid cycler post was great. The years worth of comments were even better than the post. Very helpful.
Your blog is well put together - I will surely be back often.
You are stronger than you think.
