What She Said

Whenever we’re bothered by something, it’s something to do with US - no matter what the other person did.

This statement has struck me quite hard. I must say that I am bothered by a whole heap of steaming stuff, but is it really always me? According to this statement, it is. I am bothered by something because of something inside of me saying “hey that hurts” or “hey that pisses me off”.

Like, is it my issue that I have a problem with being abused? Is it my problem that I have an issue because of all the sexual assault I have had to deal with? It only makes sense on the surface of things to me… like if someone says something that isn’t about me but I take it personally.

Ergh. I am thinking too hard.

Today has been a sucky mental health day for me.

I think that statement is more bearable if you don’t interpret “it’s something to do with US” as meaning “it’s OUR fault” or “it’s wrong that we feel that way” — although, of course, those really seem like the most obvious interpretations of it. You could either choose to interpret the statement as meaning that it’s ultimately up to us to control our *reactions* to things that other people do… or you could dismiss the whole statement as crap! Whatever works for you.
