One in 4 bipolar, the bipolar patch

I was just reading that one in 4 patients with a major depressive disorder actually have bipolar. Is that hard to believe? Well, I don’t know. I just know that it is an awfully high number. Technically I come from a family of 5. By all rights, that means that my sister *should* be bipolar.

I not surprised, however, that they are trying to come up with some form of bipolar patch which will enable bipolar patients to wear their drug in a patch form, much like the one used for birth control. So far, no dice. I wonder what will happen as a side effect of all these different drugs being tested at skin level. One can only imagine what could occur.

Amy Winehouse has gone to rehab. Yes, it’s true. She sang that great song about rehab and her daddy thinking she was fine. In a shocking twist of irony, her father (in law) is the one that came to the press and told the truth about why she dropped out of her tour. Sad and oddly funny at the same time. This is why they tell you not to bash it until you’ve tried it.

Researchers of the Boston Mental Health Symposium may have found the gene that causes bipolar disorder. The information is so new, there is no other documentation released right now, but at least there is hope for people to find out beforehand whether or not the disorder will be a problem for themselves.

The drugs that killed Anna Nicole Smith

I was just watching a story about Anna Nicole. I heard that she had been taking more than ten different drugs that were prescribed by her psychiatrist. This is the story I didn’t need to see right before I go to the doctor myself. The autopsy tech figured out that these drugs are the ones that killed her in the end. I can’t believe that she was taking that many pills at once. They say that at least 600 pills were ingested by Smith prior to her death. I know that most psychiatrists wouldn’t do this, but it just goes to who show you how far some “professionals” will go to make a buck. There is more to the story, though.

Overused Tasers in Bipolar Cases

Too many times I have read about tasers being used to subdue frantic bipolar people. They have been utilized by more cops in the last year than ever before, it seems. It might not seem like a big deal to many, but tasers have gotten more efficient over the years. I was reading about the King Cobra which harbors 900,000 volts. Imagine feeling like your muscles are melting as you fall to the ground. That’s a lot of shock for one hit.

Tasers should only be used in self defense, but have been used more and more just to put disturbances at rest. I condone them only to protect yourself against a predator, but if a person is running a little manic then they really shouldn’t be attacked with a taser.

I was just reading about how the rate of suicide increases as Spring approaches. I guess my feelings were spot on. I have been increasingly agitated with the coming spring. Has it been to the point of considering suicide? No, but I have been wishing for Jesus to come back LOL It’s a terrible feeling…to not want to be here anymore. I am going through what they call a cycle. I rapid cycle, anyway, but it becomes more or less severe at different intervals in my life. Read the article, you will find out a few interesting things about the phenomena.

Bipolar Disorder & Depression: In the News #3

Not much going on recently, but I did find out that the University of Michigan is doing something rather rare. They have just acquired $41 million in funding to open a Depression Center.

The three-story, 112,500 square-foot-building has a glass-enclosed lobby, an atrium topped with a large skylight and a rear fa�ade made entirely of glass to bring light into the center. It�s lower level houses a 120-seat auditorium and meeting rooms that open onto a patio facing a forested area.^source

I think it’s a step in the right direction so that more people can get the help they need, while reducing the risk of being misdiagnosed. They are supposed to be on the cutting-edge of care so I hope that it all works out for the best. I love that one of the top colleges has decided to enrich their students’ lives with this involved study into the human mind. I just hope that we get better psychologists and psychiatrists as a result.

A man in Las Vegas has just been given three years probation for growing marijuana. Pierre Werner would have been facing more than that, but he had a license to treat his bipolar disorder with the drug. He was also growing the marijuana in hopes of helping others who needed it for their bipolar disorder. I’m moving to Vegas, just kidding.

Bipolar Disorder: A sad day

I just read some disturbing news about a bipolar youth who was tazed to death in Jerseyville. He had been sitting outside a Walgreens with a Bible in his hands screaming for Jesus and his mother. I think it is sick that five policemen thought it was alright to shoot him with 5 tazers and then proceed to continuously fry his body.

People who knew the 17 year old have been crying with outrage since this happened. Here is a post that was published yesterday. Here is another that was posted by his friend on Myspace on the 29th of October.

They are trying to claim that he died from his “dementia” but that is not the case.
